Public Distribution System

Ration System

Brief Of PDS

PDS stands for Public distribution system. It provides a system of management of scarcity through the distribution of food grains at affordable prices. It has been providing food grains since June 1997 Under Target Public Distribution System(TPDS) which focuses on the poor. PDS is supplemental in nature, meaning it is not intended to fulfill the entire requirement of any of the commodities distributed to families or a section of society.

Establishment

The Public Distribution system was established in June 1997 by the Indian government with an initiative to eradicate the scarcity of food among the poor. It was launched under the Target Public Distribution System(TPDS) which ensures that the food reaches the relevant set of poor people.

Working of PDS

Under the guidance of PDS, the States were supervised to develop and run an unbiased arrangement for the identification of the poor, for the delivery of foodgrains, and for its distribution in an effective and transparent medium at the FPS Level. FPS stands for Fair Price Shops which have been licensed to facilitate the distribution of essential commodities to ration card holders.

  1.   Allocation of Rations at the Buffer.

The Central government has assigned the FCIs (Food Corporation of India) for the procurement, storage, transportation, and bulk allocation of food grains to the State governments.

2.    Distribution of Ration within the State.

The State government is responsible for the identification of eligible families, issue of Ration Cards, and Supervision of the functioning of the Fair Price Shops(FPSs) and other major and minor jobs.

3.    Distribution of Ration to the eligible people.

Here onwards the Fair Price Shops(FPSs) are responsible for the distribution of food grains and other essential commodities to the targeted public.
