Palamu

Palamu a unique confluence of history, biodiversity and modernity on earth.

Palamu is one among 24 districts of Jharkhand in India. It is famous for its rich and glorifying heritage, biodiversity and culture. Located on the north-western part of Jharkhand it shares border with Rohtas and Aurangabad district in Bihar (state) in north, Gaya (Bihar) and Chatra in east, Latehar, Lohardaga and Gumla in south and Surguja(district of Chattisgarh) and Garhwa in west. With great stories of courage and energy it came into existence on 1st Jan 1892. Former to this it was a sub division with Daltonganj as headquarters. There are three Sub-Divisions in Palamu which are additionally divided in to 21 blocks.

 

Location

Located between 23° 50′ – 24° 8′ north latitude and between 83° 55′ – 84° 30′ , Palamu has a total Area of 5043.8 Sq. km and a population of 2,696,418 (estimates as per aadhar uidai.gov.in Dec 2022 data). The major groups of people residing in Palamu are Hindu (85.9%), Muslim (13.3%), Christian (0.4%), and Other Religions (0.3%). With a population density of 442 persons per Sq. Km, It ranks 6th among the 24 districts of Jharkhand in terms of population.

 

Climate

Palamu is recognized with its hot and dry climate from March to June and a subsequent retardation in temperature from October to December. The temperature ranges between 5.6°C in winters to 46.7°C in summers. January is the coldest month of the year while March, April and May are the hot, dry and scorching months. In the middle of March and June this suffers with dust storms (Loo) due to low humidity, high temperature and hustling winds. It has an Average Annual Rainfall of about 1335 mm. Rivers

Palamu is gifted with three major rivers Son, Koel and Auranga to nurture its people and rich biodiversity.

Son River

Son River is one among the perennial rivers located in central India. Originating near Amarkantak Hills in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district of Chhattisgarh is nurtures many states of India and one among them is Jharkhand. It length is about 784km. Bicarbonate is the most abundant ion found in the samples of Son River meeting about 58% of the total dissolved Loads.

 

Koel River

Koel River originates from the Lawapani Waterfalls, near Lohardaga, Chota Nagpur Plateau, it is energized by three streams in Jharkhand, specifically North Karo, South Karo, Koina. Koel River is divided into two fragments namely North Koel River and the South Koel River. The length of North Koel River is 360 Km while the length of the South Koel River is 285 Km.

 

Auranga River

Auranga River originates in a pass of Soheda and slopes down from Ranchi plateau for about 80 km and finally flows into the Koel River. The Auranga River is also called with the local name of Orange River. There are two main tributaries of Auranga River namely Tan and Man streams with joins and accelerates it motion. It has a total length of 80 Km.

Palamu is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage. Some of its most prominent Forests and Parks are listed below.

 

Palamu Wildlife Sanctuary

This Wildlife Sanctuary can be also called the ECO Heart of Palamu. With a total forest cover of 979.97 Sq. Km it is home to a number of species of flora and fauna from that certain time an area of 226.33 Sq. Km of this sanctuary has been acknowledged as the Betla National Park and both of these areas have been included in Palamau Tiger  Reserve under Project Tiger. It is nurtured by the Burha River, North Koel and its Tributaries.

 

Palamu Tiger Reserve

This Reserve is very special to Indian biodiversity because it is one among the nine Original tiger reserve of India. Prior to this it was an area used for cattle grazing and camping even though it was very prone to forest fire but after 1947 this area of Palamu was set aside under the India Forest Act and subsequently it was setup as the Palamu Tiger Reserve.
